New Avenues in Male Reproductive Health
Male infertility and male hypogonadism are common reproductive disorders that present in different forms, affecting many aspects of health. However, recent studies have uncovered new ways to improve men's reproductive health. For example, mapping of genetic pathways and novel molecular approaches have allowed us to interrogate mechanisms underlying testicular function which lead to pathology. These may also lead to the development of novel drug therapies to modulate testicular function.
This timely special collection will pull together an array of research focused on improving the treatment of male reproductive disorders. It will cover topics including:
- Genetic disorders in male infertility, including genetics of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
- Sperm maturation during transport through the male reproductive tract
- Environmental threats for male reproductive health
- Dysregulation of testicular function by obesity or diabetes
- Novel seminal or sperm diagnostic markers of male reproductive function
- Putative therapeutic targets or therapies for male infertility
- Efficacy of treatment with FSH for infertile male patients
- Sperm methylome/transcriptome/proteome and embryo development/offspring health
- Microbiome and reproductive health
- In vitro spermatogenesis.

Dr. Anu Sironen – Guest Editor Dr. Sironen, University College London (UCL), is currently working on a UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) funded research project to understand the cilia related causes and mechanisms in male infertility. She is a Senior Research Scientist at UCL and Natural Resources Institute Finland, where her studies have identified several genetic causes of male infertility in animal models and in human patients. |
